“Those hills go on and on..” he said once recovered. “Now it’s on to the party for a beer or two”.

And the party was great – held at a member’s apartment in South Bondi for the past 20 or so years – the tradition of doing the run and then joining the party is written in stone within the club’s membership. Club Treasurer Jim Box has been there almost every year (he did miss a few due to Gay Games being held at the same time – a problem that will occur again next year as some 20 Frontrunners compete in Cologne). Jim completed the course in 61mins – a fabulous result considering he is in the 60-65 age bracket.

We also had past members join us – one being Douwe Vorst who now resides on the Gold Coast. Douwe has done 37 of the 39 City to Surf runs and makes the trip to Sydney to maintain his record. Melbourne Frontrunner Malcolm Campbell made the trip to Sydney just for the run and flashed through the course in just over 48 mins – no wonder he won a swag of medals in the recent OUTgames in Copenhagen.

Not to be outdone the Sydney club had an even faster runner with local runner Matt Webster finishing the 14Ks in a fraction over 47 minutes. A top 100 place getter out of 75,000 runners makes Matt a record holder within the club – which celebrates it’s 26th anniversary soon.

Club coach Wayne Morgan complimented everyone’s achievements “The hill training over the past month or so was tough but the members did so well. Many of the women had a great run and they were happy with their times.”

“Food and plenty of refreshment eased the aches and pains away” stated club President Ben Jackson:

“Our club had all sorts of finishers – from those in the leading group right through to back-of-the packers who jogged/walked the hilly course…they all wanted to finish then party on”.
