Track running – Tuesday and Thursday evenings

Dear runners,

And now the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
My friend, Ill say it clear
Ill state my case, of which Im certain……
I’m sure you will be relieved to hear that this will be the last time I state any case, and what a week to go out on!

As some of you know I will be stepping down as President and resigning from the Committee at this weeks AGM. Scott and I are off to the US in a few months. Im told the runs are much flatter over there, so hopefully my times improve with the move. Ill certainly have to keep running in order to ward off the calories from the supersized portions and lashings of Ranch Dressing!
Congratulations to all our members who took part in the SMH Half on Sunday. It was great to be part of the Art Gallery Cheer Squad and see everyone pass by a few times.I hope everyone was happy with their times.

My US colleague Alexa found it very tough (see the above re: flat courses!) so I drove her home via Heartbreak Hill so she could really appreciate a Sydney Hill. She still managed a good time.

A big shout out as well to our members who have been braving some ultra distance events – 100ks and the 750k XPD to name a few – well done all.
Finally, a last reminder to get along to the AGM this weekend. If you cant attend please fill out a proxy form which will be at running this Saturday. It gets underway at the Taxi Club at 4pm and I hope to see many of you there. I may even buy a parting round of drinks!

So to all my many friends in the great organization that is Sydney Frontrunners, thanks for your support over the past 2 years. Ive had a great time and look forward very much to continuing to run with you when home leave arrangements allow it. In the meantime, its time to ramp up City to Surf training….I really need to get that 60 before I go!

Take care, all the very best and see you soon

Regards Ben

Hi runners…..

Congrats to all those runners who completed their events last weekend…. there were lots of you doing the 100K/45K and 21K events around this big country.

Check out the results below for details. One thing i would like to remind members is that when you enter a race like the SM H half – please register also as a team – our Vets came 4th overall but many members did not register in a SFR team. Next time please!
Also if you wear your red SFR singlet the cheer squad folk can spot you so much more easily….. sorry if we missed you but we stayed for hours and kept a vigilant watch!

Good luck to Matthew W as he and his mates tackle the gruelling XPD event in Cairns which started this morning. the event starts with a paddle around Dunk Island before a long cycle to Tully and then some serious white water rafting! Each team has 7 days to complete the 700K event! Check out daily results on Matt’s progress – team name “Waiting for Inspiration” at http://geocentric.geo-loco.com/geocentric/xpd/

Don’t forget the AGM – NEXT Saturday
May 22 4pm at Taxi club….. We need lots of new faces to help us through a big year ahead- not just the Cologne Games but also Wellington NZ games next year. Nominations close that day and proxies need to be submitted before the AGM.

Track runners – growing numbers hitting the track Tuesday and Thursday evening….. Matt L/Jim/Wayne have details…come along..

The Northface 100 – Blue Mountains – Sat 15 / Sun 16 May

What a truly life changing experience. 4 months ago I was wondering why anyone would be mad enough to run 100 kms through the Blue Mountains. Not just running along scenic, unsealed roads but up and down steep and rocky hills, ridges, fire trails, steps and ladders, all the time weighed down by a backpack. Now I know why! You bounce along happy and optimistic for the first 20/30/40 km. Then tiredness gradually sets in and you want to stop. You just keep going, pushing yourself way beyond what you think are your personal limits. You are weary, cold and hungry but the camaraderie and optimism of others on the trail lift your spirits and keep you moving. Then you finally cross the 100 km finish line exhausted but ecstatic, feeling that you could conquer the world.

I finished in a time of 16:37:37, coming in just before Saturday midnight . I was placed 165 out of 553 and 11th in the Veterans category. 103 unfortunate people did not finish and I can only imagine how devastated they must have been. I was lucky enough to come through with no injuries despite three falls in the last 3 km when I was tripping over anything more than 1 mm high. Right now I never want to see another step, ladder or trail again. However, the mind has a great way of expunging memories of hills and endless steps so I’ll probably be back to do it all again next year. KB

Sunday 16 May was the annual Ocean Rd Marathon from Lorne to Apollo Bay.

Actually the race is 45km which is an ultra (just).

The weather was unusually perfect, cool, sunny and a slight breeze. The course is endlessly undulating with two long grinds finishing off with the last 8km fairly flat. The view is stunning.

This is a true community event, wonderfully organised, great volunteers and local support. Zoe and Clair (guest) enjoyed the relatively easier 23km

SFR takes out Maroubra Fun Run 8k teams

Posted by Wayne on 25 Oct 2009 | Tagged as: News Articles

Members of SFR won the 8K teams event in the Maroubra fun run today. And the 4K team came 6th – not bad considering there were over 20 registered teams in the event.

High humidity with the threat of rain and those challenging hills did not worry the SFR squad as they made their way around South Maroubra. Matt W came in third place overall in the 4K after a challenging month of competition. Wayne M won his 4K age group and was surprised with his result. Jeannie and Priscilla both enjoyed the run with Jeannie doing her fastest time this season.

In the 8K Steven S did a great time with Dennis J – recovering from some minor surgery, managing a 5th place in his age group. Jim B ran hard to secure 1st place in his age group with Gerry G not far behind. Michael S ran well to bring the team home.

Well done everyone… trophies presented next week.

A remarkable effort by Matthew Webster who finished the competition with 3 gold medals (8K cross country, 5000m track, 1500m track) and one silver medal (800m track) in his age group. Fabulous results also from Jim Box, Robert Forrest, Kieron Blackmore, Dennis Johnson and Matthew Lynch. Attacks on LGBT athletes in Copenhagen

Posted by Webmaster on 30 Jul 2009 | Tagged as: News Articles

Statement from the Federation of Gay Games **concerning attacks on LGBT athletes in Copenhagen

“We condemn the violent attacks against LGBT athletes and spectators during the OutGames taking place this week in Copenhagen, Denmark.

This week we are all Copenhageners and we stand in solidarity with OutGames organizers and the very gay-friendly people of Copenhagen against this kind of violence.
Our thoughts are with the runner injured by the explosive devices at the Track Stadium today and the people who were attacked on Sunday.

We are pleased to hear that all injuries have been minor and that runner will still likely be able to compete. We extend our full support to all the participants at the OutGames.

Copenhagen has a reputation as one of the most LGBT friendly places on earth. Even there, we are reminded that our community still faces those that would deny us our basic human rights, even the freedom to run in a track meet in safety. But we will not be discouraged; rather, we will run, swim, jump, throw, grapple, volley and perform at events like the Gay Games and OutGames, celebrating our right to love who we want.”
Media coverage of the two incidents:

About The Federation of Gay Games

The Federation of Gay Games is the international governing body that perpetuates the quadrennial Gay Games and promotes the event’s founding principles of “Participation, Inclusion and Personal Best”™. The Gay Games were conceived by Dr. Tom Waddell, an Olympic decathlete, and were first held in San Francisco in 1982.

Message from the President

Hi runners

Great to see so many at Bruno on Friday – 40 of us laughed our way through the film, and how civilized to see it in a cinema where you can drink beer! Fortunately that didn’t stop a big turnout on Saturday morning where we took our first run to Vaucluse. Just a reminder…Frontrunners doesn’t run on gay time – we set off at 8 or 9 sharp, so don’t be late!

Now I know last week I said I wouldn’t be at Bruno and then I turned up – but this week I’m definitely not there as I’m at the Country Estate. City to Surf training run/regular coast run at 8am or 5k at 9am. Have a good week and Ill see you on the 25th if not earlier

Take care, Ben

Message from the Secretary

Doing City to Surf? PLEASE register as a team – Sydney Frontrunners in the open mixed division.

Food taste testing should be happening in August – beef or lamb this time! More later..

Happy running………. Wayne Email: sydneyfrontrunners@gmail.com

Parramatta Duathlon

Sunday 12 July saw the start of a cool but not too cold cloudy morning for round 2 of the Hills District Duathlon. The race consists of a 3.2km run/19.2km bike/3.2km run around the very pretty Parramatta Park. A bit like Centennial Park but arguably nicer for cyclists as it has really fast downhill swoops and a nice meandering loop with a sting of a hill.

The rain managed to hold off until the very end of the race.
